Update on ASEAN Free Trade Agreement
The Philippine government (GRP) will implement the ASEAN Trade in Goods Agreement (ATIGA) on time after Executive Order No. 850 (EO 850) was published late December 2009.  EO 850 reduces tariffs of almost all goods originating from the ten (10) member-states of the ASEAN to zero percent starting January 2010.  These include among others, certain fruits and vegetables, coffee beans, tobacco, spirits, processed meat and plywood.  Tariffs on corn, poultry and swine, on the other hand, will decline to 5 percent as a result of previous executive orders.  Rice tariffs should reportedly be at 20 percent starting January 2010 under the ATIGA.   In a related development, the recent publication of Executive Order No. 851 (EO 851) also paves the way for the implementation of tariff reductions beginning 2010 for goods originating from member-states of the ASEAN-Australia-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (AANZFTA).
